Congratulations to Owain Phillips for Achieving the Scarlet FM Young Apprentice Award 2014, held at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David on Friday 24th October 2014.
This category was open to individuals who have excelled in their apprentice roles and I’m sure you’ll agree that our winner has done just that. He started his studies in September 2011. He was a regarded as late starter which is probably why he found it difficult to gain an apprenticeship within a local company. But that didn’t stop him and he was correctly advised to apply for the Pathways to Apprenticeship programme and from this programme he advanced onto the CCTAL Shared Apprentice Programme as a Shared Apprentice Carpenter.
In 2014, he was chosen to work on the overseas project in Uganda, where he led a team of 40 local construction workers to complete a storage facility . Thanks to the skills he has gained and his personal qualities he often now mentors other trainees and apprentices at the college.
Since achieving his NVQ Level 3 qualification in Carpentry back in July 2014. He has recently started an HNC and Foundation Degree course too. As his host contractor, Morganstone Ltd, have offered him a trainee management position.
