Jordan Jones started his career in construction as a Cyfle Building Skills apprentice before being hired as a trainee quantity surveyor with Andrew Scott Ltd. He is currently working to complete a Level 3 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment on placement with the company.

Jordan was 15 when he first learnt about quantity surveying and knew instantly that it was a profession he would like to pursue in the future.

A native of Neath, Jordan’s education began at Crynallt Primary School before moving onto Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School.

Upon leaving school, Jordan completed a work experience placement during the summer with one of the UK’s oldest and most established independent civil engineering and construction companies, Andrew Scott Ltd., within the estimating department at their Head Office in Port Talbot.

As a result of this placement, Jordan firmly understood that a career in construction was for him. He enrolled to study a BTEC Level 3 (Extended Diploma) in Construction and the Built Environment with NPTC Group of Colleges. It was here that he was recruited by Cyfle Building Skills, and we arranged a placement for him, once again with Andrew Scott Ltd.

Once placed with Andrew Scott Ltd, his first taste of the construction industry was working on site at Gorseinon Primary School, where the construction firm were in the process of building a new single storey school with external works including a MUGA and 2G Sports Pitches.

Initially, Jordan’s placement began by working alongside a civil engineer to gain experience in setting out the building, including positioning the bolts for the structural steel. After that, he moved on to become more involved with the quantity surveying side of the project, which included placing orders with suppliers.

Jordan is now a trainee quantity surveyor with the company, studying towards a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment, which includes one day a week in the classroom at NPTC Group of Colleges. When Jordan completes the BTEC he will go on to study further for a HNC, HND and finally a Degree in quantity surveying and commercial management.

During his placement with Andrew Scott Ltd, Jordan has also worked with the team who delivered the Covid-19 Field Hospitals across South West Wales.

Jordan is very grateful for the support he has received, and is understandably optimistic about his future career, as he explained:

“This apprenticeship with Cyfle, and my placement with Andrew Scott Ltd, has provided me with excellent foundations to progress further up the ladder and eventually become a Senior Quantity Surveyor. The knowledge I have gained through working with such experienced people at Andrew Scott Ltd. has been invaluable, and Cyfle have continued to support me right the way through this process.”

When asked what advice he would give to someone considering following the apprenticeship route with Cyfle Building Skills, Jordan said:

“If you are considering an apprenticeship through Cyfle you should definitely go ahead with it. You will gain a wealth of experience while not necessarily knowing how much you’re getting to know. Cyfle will also carefully place you with a company that they believe is right for you.”

“So far, my apprenticeship has been excellent, and the construction industry is such an enjoyable sector to work in I wouldn’t want to work in any other.”

Mark Bowen, Managing Director at Andrew Scott Ltd, said:

“The Technical Apprentice programme is working well and this advanced level route, NVQ Level 3, offered by Cyfle, gives a recognised qualification as well as hands on experience and plenty of opportunities to learn and progress.

“Jordan Jones, our first technical apprentice who has recently qualified, has now been offered a full-time position with Andrew Scott Ltd, and has already developed his skills and knowledge whilst getting paid. Jordan will now embark on his next journey and career step with Andrew Scott Ltd. During his two years Jordan attended NPTC Group of Colleges one day a week and when not at College he developed his knowledge and skills on site and at head office.

“Andrew Scott Ltd, in partnership with Cyfle, intend to use this advanced level apprenticeship more often in conjunction with the successful shared trade apprenticeship scheme.”
